KUALA LUMPUR, April 19 — The federal and Sabah governments are working together to provide immediate basic aid and temporary shelter for victims of a fire that destroyed Kampung Bahagia in Sandakan.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he was shocked by reports of the blaze, which razed hundreds of homes in the village.

“In this situation, the priority is the safety of the victims and swift on-the-ground assistance,” he said in a Facebook post.

The early morning fire destroyed around 200 houses in the floating village.

Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station chief Jimmy Lagung said authorities received an emergency call at 1.32am, with 35 firefighters from Sandakan and Kinabatangan deployed to control the blaze.

A temporary relief centre at Dewan PPR Batu Sapi was later activated at 7am to accommodate displaced residents. — Bernama
