KUALA TERENGGANU, June 11 — Yayasan Terengganu (YT) is considering forming partnerships with reputable bus operators to provide transport for members of Persatuan Mahasiswa Anak Terengganu (Permata) returning home during festive seasons or long holidays.

YT’s chief assistant director (higher education), Wan Mohamad Nazir Wan Jusoh, said the initiative aims to enhance student safety in the wake of the tragic bus crash along Jalan Raya Timur-Barat (JRTB) in Gerik, Perak, which claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students.

He noted that most of the victims were Permata executive committee members and regular members from the Besut and Setiu districts.

“We will bring this proposal, along with other suggested improvements, to the attention of YT’s top management and Permata leadership,” he said when contacted yesterday.

Wan Mohamad Nazir also clarified that the bus involved in the crash was not arranged by Permata but rented privately by the students.

He added that although YT does own several buses, they are insufficient to accommodate all 10,000 Permata members across the country, as the existing fleet is mainly allocated for Imtiaz schools, which run packed programmes throughout the year.

“There are currently 21 Permata associations nationwide — 19 in public universities and two in private institutions,” he added. — Bernama
