PARIS, March 27 — France has expressed “serious concern” over the International Olympic Committee’s decision to reintroduce gender testing for female athletes, calling it “a step backward.”

Sports Minister Marina Ferrari said in a statement that France opposes the widespread use of genetic testing, citing ethical, legal, and medical issues, as well as conflicts with French law, which prohibits such tests.

The IOC announced yesterday that only “biological females” will be allowed to compete in women’s events, effectively excluding transgender women. The new rules, starting from the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, will also bar many athletes with differences in sexual development (DSD), formerly known as intersex athletes.

Ferrari criticised the policy for defining female athletes without accounting for the biological variations of intersex individuals, describing it as a narrow and potentially stigmatizing approach. — AFP
