ESSEN, Aug 19 — Borussia Dortmund narrowly avoided an upset in the German Cup yesterday, relying on a brilliant 79th-minute strike from Serhou Guirassy to clinch a nervy 1-0 win over third-tier Rot-Weiss Essen.

In their first competitive match of the season, Dortmund struggled to break down the well-organised home defence, who limited the visitors to few clear chances. Essen even came close to taking the lead in the 41st minute, but Romien Safi’s close-range effort was saved by goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.

Essen continued to frustrate Dortmund after the break, closing down attacks and looking dangerous on the counter. However, with just over 10 minutes remaining, Guinea international Guirassy collected the ball on the edge of the area, muscled past two defenders and fired a powerful low shot into the bottom corner to give his side the lead.

Dortmund managed to hold on despite late pressure from the home side, booking their place in the second round. The win was marred by an injury to defender Yan Couto, who went off in stoppage time after a heavy challenge from Kelsey Owusu. — Reuters
