PARIS, June 21 — France is set to hold its annual street music festival on Sunday under extreme heat conditions, with about a third of the country placed under the highest-level heat warning and alcohol consumption banned in affected areas.
KUALA LUMPUR, June 21 — Nearly 39,000 Malaysians lost their jobs in the first five months of this year, prompting the government to step up support measures for affected workers.
According to data cited by ETHRWorldSEA, the Human Resources Ministry reported that 38,953 workers were recorded as having lost their jobs between January and May under the Employment Insurance System (EIS).
Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan said the majority of those affected were aged between 25 and 39.
Men accounted for 23,536 cases, while women made up 15,417.
The job losses were mainly in the manufacturing, wholesale and retail trade, motor vehicle repair, and administrative support sectors, largely due to corporate restructuring and operational adjustments.
Ramanan said the ministry is expanding employment matching and skills development programmes to help displaced workers secure new jobs and transition into higher-demand industries.
Despite the increase in layoffs, he said Malaysia’s labour market remains stable, with an unemployment rate of 3.0 per cent in April and a total labour force of 17.33 million people. — Daily Express
