KUALA LUMPUR, July 5 — The Immigration Department of Malaysia has detained a Bangladeshi man in Kuantan following a viral social media post alleging he possessed both a Malaysian international passport and a Bangladeshi passport, despite Malaysia not recognising dual citizenship.

In a statement, the department said the post had sparked public concern and prompted calls for immediate investigations.

Immigration director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said a joint operation involving the Pahang Immigration Department and the National Registration Department led to the discovery of the man inside a container at Jalan Kuantan Bandar Damansara on July 4.

“The team found a Bangladeshi man inside the container,” he said, adding that officers also seized two expired Malaysian international passports and a Seafarer’s Service Book belonging to a Malaysian citizen.

Six immigration officers conducted the raid at about 6.30pm before taking the man to the Kuantan Immigration Office for further investigation.
