TOKYO, Jan 22 — Japan has halted the restart of the world’s largest nuclear power plant just hours after it began, though the reactor remains “stable,” the operator said.
KUALA LUMPUR, July 18 — Over 2,000 police officers will be mobilised to ensure safety and public order during the rally set to take place at Dataran Merdeka on July 26.
Kuala Lumpur’s acting police chief, Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad, confirmed that the police have received official notice from the rally organisers, which was submitted to the Dang Wangi district police headquarters (IPD).
“We’ve identified four starting points where participants are expected to gather before proceeding to Dataran Merdeka — Sogo, Masjid Jamek, Masjid Negara, and Pasar Seni,” he said.
He added that estimates from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) Special Branch suggest the turnout could range between 10,000 and 15,000 people.
Speaking to reporters after the Kuala Lumpur police chief handover ceremony at the city police headquarters (IPK), Mohamed Usuf emphasized the importance of maintaining peace during the assembly.
“While we respect the public’s right to assemble peacefully, we urge participants to avoid any form of provocation and behave responsibly to preserve public safety,” he said.
“They are free to express their opinions, but should any offences involving speech — particularly related to religion, race, or royalty (3R issues) — occur, we will take appropriate legal action,” he warned.
For now, no road closures are planned, but police will continue to assess the situation and implement necessary measures on the day of the rally.
Separately, on the case of Datin Seri Pamela Ling Yueh’s kidnapping, Mohamed Usuf said there have been no major breakthroughs. A total of 48 witnesses from both Malaysia and abroad have been interviewed, and the suspect’s photofit has not significantly advanced the investigation.
Ling, 42, was reported missing on April 9 while en route to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office in an e-hailing vehicle to give a statement for an ongoing investigation. A missing persons report was filed at 3.02 pm that day. — Bernama
