SEPANG, June 20 — Customs officers have thwarted several drug smuggling attempts involving a total of 30.14 kilogrammes (kg) of narcotics valued at approximately RM2.65 million through the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

KLIA Customs director Zulkifli Muhammad said the first case occurred on April 17, when a man was arrested for attempting to smuggle 14.65kg of cannabis buds, worth nearly RM1.44 million, in his checked luggage on a flight bound for Europe.

He explained that the suspect was flagged by the Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) due to a blacklist record, which led to a baggage inspection.

“During the scan, the individual tried to escape but was swiftly detained by Customs officers. The cannabis was found vacuum-sealed in plastic to avoid detection,” he said during a press conference yesterday.

In another case on May 16, authorities uncovered 5.31kg of ecstasy with an estimated value of RM900,000 hidden in a consignment at a cargo terminal in the KLIA Free Trade Zone. The drugs, believed to be from Europe, had been falsely declared as laptop components.

Later, on May 24, 10.18kg of syabu worth nearly RM300,000 was discovered in another shipment, concealed among clothing items.

Zulkifli said investigations into both consignments are ongoing but are hampered by the use of fake company names and false addresses by the smugglers.

“We visited the premises listed in the shipping documents, but the companies either don’t exist or were using someone else’s address,” he added. — Bernama
