LIVERPOOL, July 12 — Liverpool will retire Diogo Jota’s number 20 jersey in a heartfelt tribute to the Portuguese forward, who tragically died alongside his brother, Andre Silva, in a car accident earlier this month.

“Following discussions with his wife, Rute, and family, the club will retire the number 20 shirt across all levels of Liverpool FC, including LFC Women and the Academy, in honour and memory of Diogo,” the club announced yesterday.

“This marks the first time in Liverpool Football Club’s history that such an honour has been given to an individual,” said chief executive Michael Edwards. “It is a truly unique tribute to a truly special person.”

Liverpool will play their first match since the tragedy on Sunday, facing English Championship side Preston in a pre-season friendly.

Before the 1400 GMT kickoff, Liverpool’s iconic anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone” will be played, and Preston will lay a wreath in front of the away fans. A minute’s silence will follow, with digital tributes shown on the stadium’s big screen and pitchside advertising boards. Players from both teams will also wear black armbands in remembrance. — AFP
