TOKYO, Jan 22 — Japan has halted the restart of the world’s largest nuclear power plant just hours after it began, though the reactor remains “stable,” the operator said.
KUALA LUMPUR, July 16 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detained two Bangladeshi men, including a director of a foreign-based tourism company, on suspicion of leading a syndicate that smuggled foreign nationals into Malaysia without proper immigration checks.
A source revealed that both suspects, aged in their 50s, were arrested during an MACC operation carried out between 5pm and 7pm yesterday in Negeri Sembilan and Kuala Lumpur.
“The suspects are believed to be foreign agents who bribed enforcement officers at KLIA Terminal 1 (Kuala Lumpur International Airport) to facilitate the illegal entry of foreign nationals through official entry points,” the source said.
The syndicate allegedly engaged in “counter setting” activities by approaching officers at KLIA 1 to expedite and ease immigration clearance for arriving foreign nationals.
The two suspects have been remanded for six days until July 20, following a remand order issued today by Senior Registrar Shaik Zuladdruse Merican Sadzol Othman Merican at the Putrajaya Magistrate’s Court.
MACC Intelligence Division senior director Datuk Saiful Ezral Arifin confirmed the arrests when contacted and stated that the case is being investigated under Section 16(b) of the MACC Act 2009. — Bernama
