According to Anadolu Ajansi, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the quake occurred at 11.47 pm local time, 27 kilometres east-northeast of Jalalabad, at a depth of 8 km.
Authorities cautioned that the death toll could rise as contact with residents in remote areas is still limited, while rescue teams are on their way to assist those trapped under debris.
The tremors were felt widely, including in Pakistan’s capital Islamabad, with more than 1.2 million people experiencing strong shaking. Reports also indicated significant damage in remote mountainous regions. — Bernama
