WINDHOEK (Namibia), May 31 — A lion killed a 59-year-old man at a luxury lodge in the remote north western region of Namibia, police confirmed.

The man was camping with a group of tourists at a tented resort when the early morning attack occurred. According to Environment Ministry spokesperson Ndeshipanda Hamunyela, the victim had stepped out of his tent to use the toilet when the lion attacked.

Although fellow campers managed to scare the animal away, the man had already succumbed to his injuries.

Police spokesperson Elifas Kuwinga said officers are investigating the scene and a full report will be released in due course.

Desert-adapted lions inhabit Namibia's remote northwest, where sand dunes and mountains converge. As of 2023, the population was estimated at around 60 adult lions and over a dozen cubs.

However, their numbers have declined recently due to a combination of drought-related prey shortages and increased human-wildlife conflict. — AFP
