KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 23 — Two foreign nationals have become the first individuals in Malaysia to be charged in court for littering under the newly enforced anti-littering law, according to a report by The Star.
IPOH, June 18 — A fisherman who went missing after a boat fire yesterday was found drowned with severe burn injuries this morning, about 4.8 nautical miles west of Tanjung Piandang, Kuala Kurau.
Kuala Kurau zone director of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), Maritime Commander Mohd Hairil Othman, said the operations centre was notified around 8am by a local fisherman who discovered the body floating at sea.
“The victim sustained extensive burn injuries. His remains were brought to the Tanjung Piandang jetty and handed over to the police for further action,” he said in a statement tonight.
Following the discovery, the search and rescue operation—carried out by the MMEA, Fire and Rescue Department, and local fishermen—was officially called off.
The incident occurred around 4am yesterday when a boat carrying three fishermen caught fire due to a suspected engine malfunction about 8.6 nautical miles east of Tanjung Piandang.
All three men jumped overboard to escape the flames, but only two were rescued. The missing fisherman, later identified as 33-year-old boat owner Cheah Chai Pun, was reported lost at sea.
Mohd Hairil also reminded members of the maritime community to prioritise safety at sea by wearing life jackets at all times.
“In case of emergencies, contact the emergency hotline 999, WhatsApp 011-3525 9919, or call the Kuala Kurau Maritime Zone Office at 05-727 9919 for immediate assistance,” he added. — Bernama
