MOSCOW, April 10 — Russia has handed over the remains of 1,000 soldiers to Ukraine in a rare wartime exchange, according to a Russian source in Moscow’s negotiating team, while Kyiv returned the bodies of 41 Russian troops in return.

The two sides regularly conduct exchanges of fallen soldiers, one of the few ongoing areas of cooperation in the four-year conflict triggered by Russia’s full-scale invasion, which has caused heavy military casualties.

Footage published by Russian state-owned Ruptly showed workers in protective gear transferring body bags between vehicles, with observers bearing Red Cross markings present at the site.

Ukraine has not yet confirmed the exchange.

Last month, the Red Cross said it was helping facilitate the return of around 1,000 bodies per month between the two sides, while thousands of remains remain unidentified.

The war, which began in February 2022, has become Europe’s deadliest since World War II, displacing millions and killing civilians on both sides. — AFP
