BUKIT MERTAJAM, Aug 16 — The fire and rescue department took around 20 minutes to help police detain a mentally unstable foreign man who was behaving aggressively and brandishing a sharp object outside a restaurant on Jalan Kubang Semang yesterday.

John Sagun Francis, Assistant Director of the Operations Division for the Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), said they received an emergency call at 4.46pm, prompting the dispatch of a fire engine from the Penanti Fire and Rescue Station.

“The police had requested assistance in apprehending a Myanmar national believed to be mentally unstable, who was naked and acting aggressively while holding a sharp object,” he said in a statement.

He explained that the operations team subdued the man by spraying him with water from the fire engine’s pump, after which he was safely taken into custody.

The man was handed over to the police for further action, and the operation ended at 5.40pm. — Bernama
