JOHOR BARU, Aug 4 — Newly appointed Johor police chief Commissioner Ab Rahaman Arsad has committed to implementing a core set of principles across the state's 10,400-strong police force to enhance professionalism and overall performance.

The initiative, known as “G.R.E.A.T.,” aims to define the identity and work ethic of the Johor police contingent.

“G stands for Good Governance, R for Responsibility, E for Empathy, A for Accountability, and T for Target-Oriented focus.

“I will do my best to instil these values within the Johor police force, with the aim of developing officers who embody the G.R.E.A.T. spirit,” he said during his speech at the handover of duties ceremony held at the Johor police contingent headquarters today.

Ab Rahaman officially assumed the role of Johor’s 67th police chief, succeeding Datuk M. Kumar, who is set to take over as Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director.

The ceremony was officiated by Bukit Aman Management Department director Datuk Seri Abdul Aziz Abdul Majid.

Ab Rahaman highlighted Johor’s importance as a key gateway to Malaysia’s southern region, noting that the state poses distinct challenges due to its unique social, economic, political, and security landscape.

“Despite the complexities, I am ready to face any challenge. I assure the people that under my leadership, the Johor police will deliver their best,” he said.

A native of Kulai, Johor, the 58-year-old Ab Rahaman joined the police force in 1989 and has held several senior roles, including management department head in the Negeri Sembilan and Kedah police contingents.

His predecessor, Kumar, 56, joined the force in December 1991 as an Inspector and has served in various capacities, including Johor deputy police chief, Johor CID deputy chief, Johor Baru South deputy district police chief, and Mersing district police chief.
