KANGAR, June 17 — The Perlis state government has officially decided to permanently stop the café project inside Gua Cenderawasih (Cenderawasih Cave), Bukit Lagi, citing safety concerns and the need to preserve the site’s geotourism value.

Perlis Tourism, Arts and Culture, and Rural Development Committee chairman Abu Bakar Hamzah said the decision followed a site inspection and a Scientific Committee Meeting held on June 11, along with a series of discussions involving the Local Authority (PBT), the Minerals and Geoscience Department (JMG), university experts, and other relevant agencies.

“All structures built within the cave will be completely dismantled to safeguard visitors and preserve the cave’s geological significance. Any future development will only be allowed outside the cave area, and must obtain technical clearance and comply with the guidelines provided by the Kangar Municipal Council (MPK) and JMG,” he said at a press conference today.

Previously, on May 18, media reports revealed that JMG had not received any formal application from the café operator or the local authority for technical evaluation related to the cave project.

The Minerals and Geoscience Department said the Bukit Lagi Geosite, where Gua Cenderawasih is located, was formed from Setul Formation limestone, dating back over 480 million years, and was rich in fossils and unique geological formations. — Picture from Explore Perlis website
