BALIK PULAU, Sept 3 — A 30-year-old teacher who allegedly slashed his wife at their home in Taman Tunas Muda, Sungai Ara, on August 27 will be charged with attempted murder at the Balik Pulau Court tomorrow.

Southwest district police chief ACP Sazalee Adam said the suspect will be charged under Section 307 of the Penal Code once his six-day remand ends.

During the 6am incident, the man is said to have attacked his 28-year-old wife, also a teacher, by slashing her neck before injuring himself with a knife in their bedroom.

The victim’s mother, who heard her screams from upstairs, rushed in and managed to pull her daughter away from the suspect.

Investigations revealed that financial troubles, including a bank loan for stock investments and instalment payments for online purchases, may have sparked the quarrel that led to the attack.

Meanwhile, the Penang Social Welfare Department (JKM) will provide counselling and monitor the victim’s recovery. Its director, Rozita Ibrahim, said officers had visited the family after the victim was discharged from hospital but were asked to give her space due to trauma.

“JKM remains committed to offering support, including counselling sessions, once the victim and her family are ready,” she said after officiating a solar aquaponics project in Teluk Bahang today.

Penang Education Department director Mohammad Dziauddin Mat Saad added that the department will continue to support the teacher’s recovery so she can return to work. She is currently on medical leave and receiving follow-up treatment.

“At this stage, there are no discussions about transferring her to another school. Our priority is ensuring she has the time and support needed to heal,” he said, noting that her school administration is also assisting with welfare needs, including special leave if required. — Bernama
