KOTA TINGGI, April 20 — A 71-year-old man has been remanded for seven days until April 26 in connection with a shooting incident in Taman Kota Jaya that left three people dead yesterday.
ALOR SETAR, April 7 — The family of a trainee teacher from the Perlis Campus of the Institute of Teacher Education (IPG), who drowned during a kayaking activity at Pantai Merdeka near Sungai Petani last Saturday, hopes such a tragedy will not recur.
Joey Ling Lin Siang’s aunt, Kee Ching Ching, 46, said the family is urging authorities to release a full and transparent report on the incident.
“We hope the findings will be comprehensive and transparent, particularly on the standard operating procedures for kayaking activities.
“We also want clarity on whether the location was suitable, and we call on the Ministry of Education to review the syllabus involving outdoor programmes,” she said when met at the Forensic Department of Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah late last night.
In the incident, Bachelor of Teaching (PISMP) Physical Education students Christopher Ling Jia Siang, 21, and Joey, 20, were found drowned at about 7.30pm while kayaking at Pantai Merdeka near Sungai Petani.
Christopher was from Kuching, while Joey was from Sibu. Their remains were flown back to Sarawak from Penang International Airport on Tuesday morning.
Before departing from Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah at 11.15pm, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek met with the victims’ families and paid her last respects.
More than 100 fellow trainees from the IPG Perlis Campus gathered at the hospital’s Forensic Department, creating a sombre atmosphere. — Bernama
