SYDNEY, Aug 26 — On Tuesday, Australia became one of several countries to suspend certain postal deliveries to the United States, referencing a "complex and rapidly evolving situation" related to the impending tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump.

Australia Post announced that the majority of items being shipped to the United States and Puerto Rico will no longer be accepted "until further notice."

Items valued at less than US$100 (RM420), as well as letters and documents, were not subject to the suspension.

The action aligns with comparable measures implemented by various postal services and mail carriers in countries such as Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, India, and New Zealand.

Taiwan has also declared that it will cease the dispatch of merchandise-type mail to the United States starting Tuesday.

The Trump administration has announced that it will eliminate a tax exemption on small packages entering the United States, effective August 29.

Gary Starr, the executive general manager of Australia Post, stated that the organization is dedicated to delivering "a dependable and competitive postal service for its customers."

We regret having to take this action; however, given the intricate and swiftly changing circumstances, a temporary partial suspension has become essential to enable us to devise and execute a viable solution for our customers. — AFP
