TOKYO, Jan 22 — Japan has halted the restart of the world’s largest nuclear power plant just hours after it began, though the reactor remains “stable,” the operator said.
NEW JERSEY, July 10 — Fabian Ruiz struck twice as European champions Paris Saint-Germain delivered a dominant 4-0 victory over Real Madrid in their Club World Cup semi-final on Wednesday, setting up a final clash with Chelsea.
In front of a largely pro-Madrid crowd of 77,542 at MetLife Stadium near New York, PSG stunned the Spanish giants with two early goals—Ruiz and Ousmane Dembele both finding the net within the first nine minutes.
Ruiz added a second just before halftime, and substitute Goncalo Ramos capped off the win with a late fourth goal, as Luis Enrique’s side moved one step closer to securing their first Club World Cup title in FIFA’s revamped tournament.
A win over Chelsea on Sunday would mark a historic season for PSG, who already clinched the Ligue 1 title and lifted their first-ever UEFA Champions League trophy earlier this year.
“We’re living a special season,” Luis Enrique told DAZN. “We deserved this win. One more step to go against a strong Chelsea side. We want to make history for this club—then maybe take a little holiday.”
After a record-breaking 5-0 win over Inter Milan in the Champions League final, PSG continued their red-hot form with four goals against Atletico Madrid in their tournament opener and now a crushing win over Real Madrid—underlining their dominance.
Madrid, meanwhile, looked off-pace and disjointed under new coach Xabi Alonso. “We just weren’t good enough today,” Alonso admitted. “We’ve got plenty to work on.”
Kylian Mbappe, facing his former club for the first time since leaving PSG last year, was largely anonymous on his first start of the competition.
Real had high hopes of claiming the inaugural 32-team Club World Cup title to add to their record 15 European crowns, but those ambitions were dashed by a ruthless PSG performance.
Even without suspended centre-back Willian Pacho, PSG’s defence held firm, with Lucas Beraldo seamlessly stepping into the backline. The rest of the starting XI remained at full strength.
A Rough Return for Mbappe
Madrid were also missing key players—defender Dean Huijsen was suspended and Trent Alexander-Arnold was unavailable—further weakening their lineup. Despite Mbappe’s return, youngster Gonzalo Garcia retained his spot up front alongside Vinicius Junior, but the attack lacked bite.
Real keeper Thibaut Courtois made two outstanding saves early on, but could do little to stop the opening goal in the 6th minute. After Dembele capitalised on a defensive error, Courtois stopped his shot, only for Ruiz to finish the rebound.
Just three minutes later, Antonio Rudiger’s miscontrol led to Dembele breaking through and calmly slotting home for PSG’s second.
The third goal, coming around the 25-minute mark, was a clinic in fluid play. From a deflected Mbappe shot caught by Donnarumma, PSG swept forward with Dembele releasing Hakimi, who squared for Ruiz to calmly slot in his second of the night.
PSG nearly made it four before halftime, and had another goal ruled out early in the second half.
Real showed little sign of a comeback, with Alonso substituting Bellingham and Vinicius after the hour—effectively waving the white flag.
PSG sealed the rout in the 87th minute when Ramos received a pass from Bradley Barcola, turned smoothly, and fired home to seal a statement win. — AFP
