Madrid, May 15 — Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé was jeered by sections of the Santiago Bernabéu crowd during his side’s 2-0 La Liga victory over Real Oviedo on Thursday.

The French forward made his return from a thigh injury as a substitute for Los Blancos, who are set to end a second consecutive season without a major trophy after FC Barcelona secured the league title last week.

Madrid’s defeat in Sunday’s Clasico at Camp Nou confirmed Hansi Flick’s Barcelona as champions, further intensifying criticism directed at Mbappé from sections of the club’s supporters over his perceived lack of commitment.

Gonzalo García gave Madrid the lead before halftime, while Jude Bellingham added a second in a comfortable win over relegated Oviedo, played in front of thousands of empty seats at the Bernabéu.

“The whistles... that’s football, you can’t change people’s opinions when they are upset,” Mbappé said after the match.

“It’s part of being a Real Madrid player and being someone in the spotlight. Players don’t always need to understand everything — they just have to accept it, move forward, and improve the situation.”

With speculation growing over his future, Madrid coach Álvaro Arbeloa started both Mbappé and Bellingham on the bench, while reports continue linking José Mourinho with a sensational return to the club.

Young midfielder Franco Mastantuono created Madrid’s best early chance, forcing a save from Oviedo goalkeeper Aaron Escandell. Oviedo also threatened through Nacho Vidal, who missed two good opportunities.

Madrid winger Vinícius Júnior, another player targeted by whistles from sections of the crowd, came close before Gonzalo García broke the deadlock after combining with Brahim Díaz.

Mbappé was introduced in the second half to mixed reactions, with some fans reportedly unhappy over his recent trip to Sardinia while recovering from injury. Despite creating chances, the striker was unable to score.

Even club legends such as Cristiano Ronaldo have previously faced criticism from Madrid supporters, highlighting the demanding atmosphere at the Bernabéu.

Club president Florentino Pérez also came under scrutiny during the match, with stewards removing a banner reading “Florentino go now” from the stands amid growing division among supporters.

Bellingham sealed the win late on after receiving a pass from Mbappé and firing a low shot past Escandell from inside the area.

Elsewhere in La Liga, Girona FC drew 1-1 with Real Sociedad to move up to 15th place, just one point above the relegation zone. Valencia CF and Rayo Vallecano also shared a 1-1 draw as both sides continue battling to avoid relegation. — AFP
