KOTA KINABALU, Aug 9 — The Sabah government has expressed deep concern over the death of 13-year-old student Zara Qairina Mahathir and pledged full support for a transparent investigation to ensure the perpetrator is brought to justice.

“This is a matter of great concern to the state government, and we fully support all calls for a transparent investigation,” said State Assistant Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Fairuz Renddan.

Fairuz urged all relevant parties to guarantee that the probe is conducted fairly and openly.

“On Thursday, I met with Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun to convey solidarity and support for the investigation.

“As a father, I can imagine the pain the victim’s mother is enduring, as well as the public’s demand for transparency. We will continue to fight for justice until this case is resolved, and I hope everyone remains strong and united for the late Zara,” he said in a statement.

Fairuz, who is also the Pintasan assemblyman, stressed that the pursuit of justice must be taken seriously.

“We understand the authorities, particularly the police, have procedures to follow, and we respect that. I urge that this investigation be given full attention so the guilty party is brought to justice and receives the appropriate punishment,” he said.

He also highlighted the importance of early education and discipline at home in shaping children’s character.

“As parents, we must instil courtesy and empathy in our children. This is the foundation of education needed to curb negative behaviour, bullying, and immoral activities among teenagers,” he added.

Fairuz further called on all parties to respect the grieving family and refrain from exploiting the tragedy for publicity or spreading unverified claims online.

“We must put ourselves in the shoes of Zara’s family. Show compassion for the mother, who is enduring unimaginable grief after losing her only child. Be responsible on social media — false information can carry legal consequences,” he said. — The Borneo Post
