WASHINGTON, June 12 — The White House stated on Tuesday that President Donald Trump will not tolerate “mob rule,” as demonstrations against his immigration policies continue to spread across the U.S., despite a military-backed crackdown in Los Angeles.
NEW YORK, May 28 — A second suspect in the alleged kidnapping and torture of an Italian bitcoin investor in New York has surrendered to authorities, officials confirmed yesterday.
On Friday, police arrested 37-year-old John Woeltz of Kentucky, who is accused of abducting and torturing an Italian cryptocurrency entrepreneur for several weeks in a luxury Manhattan townhouse in an attempt to extract his bitcoin password.
New York City Police Chief Jessica Tisch announced on Fox 5 that the second suspect, William Duplessie, turned himself in Tuesday morning.
“We have Mr. Duplessie, who we were actively looking for, in custody. He surrendered at our 13th precinct at 7:45 this morning,” Tisch stated.
She added that Duplessie will be charged alongside Woeltz with kidnapping and false imprisonment of a business associate in SoHo.
Duplessie, 33, of Miami, Florida, was seen wearing black pants and a white shirt when he turned himself in, according to photos from the scene.
The victim's name has not been officially released, but U.S. media have identified him as Italian bitcoin investor Michael Valentino Teofrasto Carturan.
Reports indicate Carturan arrived in New York from Italy on May 6 and visited Woeltz’s residence. Once there, Woeltz — described by the New York Post as “Kentucky’s crypto boss” — and Duplessie allegedly seized his passport and electronic devices, demanding access to his bitcoin accounts
When the victim refused, the suspects allegedly tortured him over a two-week period. According to police, he was tied up, beaten with a rifle, had a gun pointed at his face, was threatened with being thrown off the townhouse roof, and had his family’s lives threatened.
Key details remain unclear, including why Carturan agreed to visit the upscale SoHo townhouse and whether he ultimately gave the suspects any access to his crypto assets. — AFP
