WASHINGTON, Aug 25 — SpaceX has called off a scheduled test flight for its Starship megarocket on Sunday, citing the need for additional time to address issues, marking yet another setback for Elon Musk’s colossal project following a string of explosive failures.
SEGAMAT, Aug 29 — A mild earthquake struck Segamat again tonight, the third tremor reported in the district within just a few days.
According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), the 2.5-magnitude quake was recorded at 7.56 pm with its epicentre located about 13 kilometres north of Segamat, Johor, at a depth of 10 kilometres.
“Tremors were also felt in parts of Johor. MetMalaysia will continue monitoring the situation,” the department said in a Facebook post.
The public who experienced the tremors were also urged to complete an online survey form to assist authorities in gathering detailed data.
This comes after two minor quakes were recorded earlier in the week, heightening concerns among residents although no damage has been reported. On Wednesday, Segamat experienced a 3.2-magnitude tremor at 8.59 am, while on Aug 24, MetMalaysia confirmed a 4.1-magnitude quake in Segamat at 6.13 am, followed by a 2.8-magnitude tremor in Yong Peng at 9 am.
Segamat district officer and District Disaster Management Committee (JPBD) chairman Mohd Ezzuddin Sanusi said there have been no reports of property damage, injuries, or fatalities following tonight’s quake.
“Residents in Segamat and nearby areas felt the tremor. Security forces and relevant agencies are monitoring the situation to ensure public safety. The public is advised to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information, and rely on official updates from MetMalaysia and government agencies,” he said.
Meanwhile, in Kuala Lumpur, MetMalaysia director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said analysis showed the quake occurred along the Mersing Fault Zone.
He explained that the incident was the third aftershock since the main 4.1-magnitude earthquake on Aug 24, and MetMalaysia will continue to provide updates when necessary.
“The public need not be alarmed as the quake was of weak magnitude,” he assured. — Bernama
