SHAH ALAM, June 30 — The gas pipeline explosion in Putra Heights was caused by soil subsidence that developed over the years since the pipe was laid in 2000, leading to a 15.9cm shift in its position.

Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari disclosed the findings at a press conference today, stating that analysis of pipe samples revealed signs of structural fatigue and stress lines resulting from the displacement.

The findings were part of a detailed investigation report compiled by a multi-agency team led by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health.

The Department of Mineral and Geoscience, which also took part in the investigation, found that water had built up in the soil beneath the pipeline over time, weakening its foundation.

“Although the gas pipe complied with all technical standards, its failure was attributed to several environmental factors, including unstable soil, prolonged water accumulation that softened the ground, stress on monsoon drainage and culverts, climate-related pressures, and increasing population density,” Amirudin said.

He added that a special committee will be established to review the investigation report and propose further action.
