BOSTON, July 14 — A fire at an assisted living facility in Fall River, Massachusetts, has resulted in multiple fatalities and numerous injuries, a spokesperson for the state’s fire department said today.

“We are withholding the exact number pending updates on some patients’ conditions. This is a terrible tragedy for the City of Fall River and the families involved. Our hearts are with them this morning,” said Massachusetts fire department spokesperson Jake Wark in an emailed statement to Reuters.

Approximately 70 residents lived at the Gabriel House assisted living facility before the fire broke out. Around 50 firefighters responded to the scene to battle the blaze.

While firefighters were able to rescue many occupants, several residents were pronounced dead at the scene, and many others were taken to hospitals, Wark said.

Five firefighters sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were also transported for treatment.
