KUCHING, Aug 14 — Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has called on Asean and China to uphold stability and strengthen cooperation in the South China Sea to safeguard peace and prosperity in the region.

Speaking at a gala dinner yesterday in conjunction with the 24th Asean–China Senior Officials’ Meeting on the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC), Abang Johari said the gathering reflected a shared commitment to protecting the region.

“This region is our shared home, and we all bear the responsibility to ensure it remains a sea of peace and prosperity,” he said.

Foreign Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Amran Mohamed Zin was also in attendance.

Abang Johari drew parallels to the enduring spirit of the Zone of Peace, Freedom and Neutrality (ZOPFAN), inspired by the 1955 Bandung Conference and leaders such as Indonesia’s Soekarno, India’s Jawaharlal Nehru, and China’s Zhou Enlai, noting its continued relevance to Asean’s principles today.

He expressed pride in Sarawak’s role as host, highlighting how the state’s more than 30 ethnic groups live harmoniously, showcasing Malaysia’s unity in diversity. “Sarawak’s natural beauty, rich biodiversity and cultural heritage mirror the harmony between its people and nature,” he added.

Earlier, Amran emphasised Sarawak’s rise as a regional growth hub, citing advancements in economic cooperation, sustainable development, and green technology.

“With a focus on energy connectivity, environmental stewardship, and industrial innovation, Sarawak is not only keeping pace with regional progress but also contributing to shaping Asean’s sustainable future,” he said, adding that the state is playing a key role in integrating Borneo into the Asean Power Grid, strengthening its strategic importance within and beyond the region. — Bernama
