SEOUL, July 31 —A South Korean court has reissued an arrest warrant for former president Yoon Suk Yeol, allowing prosecutors to forcibly bring him in for questioning after he repeatedly ignored summonses.

The special counsel investigating Yoon and his wife, former first lady Kim Keon Hee, confirmed in a statement that a new arrest warrant was issued on Thursday.

Yoon sparked a political crisis in South Korea last December when he attempted to undermine civilian authority by deploying troops to parliament to block a vote on his martial law declaration.

In January, he became the first sitting president in South Korean history to be taken into custody after weeks of resisting arrest with the help of his presidential security team. Though he was released in March on procedural grounds, he was detained again in early July due to concerns he might tamper with evidence.

Prosecutors, currently probing allegations of election interference in parliament, had summoned Yoon for questioning. However, he failed to appear, with his legal team citing health concerns.

Following his continued absence, prosecutors submitted a renewed request for a detention warrant on Wednesday. With the court’s approval, authorities can now enter Yoon’s detention facility and compel him to cooperate with the investigation.

In addition to the martial law case, Yoon and his wife are also under investigation for separate allegations. Prosecutors are examining claims that a shaman, Jeon Seong-bae, received a diamond necklace and a luxury handbag from a senior Unification Church official and passed them on to Kim. — AFP
