COLOMBO, April 4 — Sri Lankan police arrested 152 foreigners, mostly Chinese, for allegedly running a hotel-based cyberscam in Chilaw, 80 km north of Colombo.

Police seized 143 laptops, 120 desktops, and 370 mobile phones at the centre, which was reportedly run by Chinese men who had rented the entire hotel. Two suspects were injured while trying to flee, and the rest were remanded in custody until April 9.

Among those arrested were 133 Chinese, including seven women, and 13 Vietnamese. Immigration authorities said similar operations had led to 135 Chinese nationals being deported last month.

The Chinese embassy noted that Sri Lanka’s strong telecom infrastructure, location, and lenient visa policies have attracted fraud gangs, and scams targeting Chinese citizens have been on the rise. Authorities also reported detaining 230 Chinese and 200 Indian nationals for cybercrime across the island in 2024. — AFP
