HARIDWAR, July 27 — At least six people were killed and several others injured in a stampede at a popular Hindu temple in Uttarakhand, northern India, today, officials confirmed.

The incident occurred on the stairway leading to the Mansa Devi temple in Haridwar, a holy city situated along the Ganges River.

“Six people have died and over 10 others are currently receiving treatment in hospital,” senior police officer Parmendra Dobhal told AFP.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said relief and rescue efforts are ongoing. “I am in constant contact with the local authorities and closely monitoring the situation,” he said in a statement.

Stampedes at religious events are unfortunately not uncommon in India. Just last month, a sudden crowd surge at a Hindu festival in Odisha resulted in three deaths and multiple injuries.

In May, six people died in Goa after thousands gathered for a fire-walking ritual, while in January, at least 30 were killed in a pre-dawn crush at the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj. — AFP
