KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 23 — Two foreign nationals have become the first individuals in Malaysia to be charged in court for littering under the newly enforced anti-littering law, according to a report by The Star.
PORTICELLO (Italy), June 21 — Salvage crews successfully raised Mike Lynch’s sunken superyacht Bayesian to the surface today and began pumping out seawater, nearly 10 months after it sank off the coast of Sicily, claiming the lives of the British tech billionaire, his teenage daughter, and five others.
Operations resumed at dawn, using one of Europe’s most powerful maritime cranes to lift the 56-metre (184-foot) yacht from the seabed.
The vessel's upper decks appeared severely damaged, while its blue hull was coated with mud and debris.
The Bayesian had been anchored off the small port of Porticello, near Palermo, when a sudden storm struck in August last year. According to a preliminary British report released last month, the yacht was likely toppled by wind gusts exceeding 117 kilometres per hour.
The yacht will remain suspended over the weekend as inspections and further preparations take place, said TMC Marine, which is leading the recovery with Dutch partner Hebo Maritiemservice. Over the past few days, they successfully raised the vessel from 50 metres below the surface.
The yacht is scheduled to be transported to the nearby port of Termini Imerese on Monday, where it will be handed over to authorities investigating the incident.
The recovery effort was aided earlier this week when the vessel’s 72-metre mast was detached using a remote-operated cutting device and placed on the seabed.
Among the victims were Lynch, founder of the software company Autonomy, his daughter Hannah, lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda, banker Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy, and the yacht’s chef, Recaldo Thomas.
