KOTA TINGGI, April 20 — A 71-year-old man has been remanded for seven days until April 26 in connection with a shooting incident in Taman Kota Jaya that left three people dead yesterday.
ALOR SETAR, April 7 — A sunset cruise vessel was detained by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) on Sunday for carrying more passengers than permitted.
Kedah and Perlis MMEA director Romli Mustafa said the vessel was stopped at about 5.20pm by an MMEA patrol boat during a routine operation, roughly 0.3 nautical miles east of Pulau Bumbon Besar.
He said inspections revealed the vessel had breached the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952 by exceeding its approved passenger capacity.
“The cruise was operated by a skipper and five local crew members aged between 23 and 37 while conducting recreational sea activities,” he said in a statement yesterday.
He added that those involved, along with the vessel and related items, were taken to the Kedah and Perlis Maritime jetty for further investigation.
Romli stressed that the agency would take firm action against any party that fails to comply with safety regulations, especially in tourism-related operations that could endanger passengers.
“MMEA will continue intensifying patrols and enforcement within Malaysian waters to ensure safety and security are consistently maintained,” he said. — Bernama
