KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 22 — The Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN) has initiated an inquiry into the Sarawak Tribune in response to a public grievance regarding the release of an article entitled "Militant Using Press Cover Eliminated," which was published on Aug 12.

The KDN issued a statement today indicating that three individuals from the publishing company were summoned to give their statements.

The ministry stated that the investigation concentrated on the release of content considered inappropriate, which could potentially disturb the public, jeopardize public order, and represent possible breaches of permit conditions as outlined in the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984 (Act 301).

The ministry regards the publication of the article with utmost seriousness, as it has led to confusion, distress, and anxiety among the community.

"Newspaper organizations are thus urged to practice heightened caution, accountability, and ethical principles in their reporting, while also ensuring that the content does not incite controversy or address public sensitivities," stated the announcement.

The act of disseminating false or misleading news, or publications deemed undesirable, may lead to legal action under Act 30. Individuals convicted of this offence could face imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years, a fine not exceeding RM20,000, or both penalties, which may also include the potential revocation of the publication permit.

The ministry emphasized that it will not make concessions on these issues and that decisive measures will be implemented against any entity deemed negligent in disseminating content that may jeopardize public safety and order. — Bernama
