KUALA KANGSAR, July 19 — The Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi) is preparing to unveil three new durian varieties over the next two years.

According to Mardi director-general Datuk Dr Mohamad Zabawi Abdul Ghani, the institute is currently assessing several promising hybrid durians that may be developed into new clones.

“We’re evaluating their adaptability across various locations. In addition to our work at Mardi Kuala Kangsar, similar hybrid development is ongoing at Mardi Jerangau in Terengganu,” he said. “The names and identification codes for these new varieties are still being finalised and will be announced during the official launch.”

He shared the update during the Duriotourism media programme at Mardi Kuala Kangsar.

Mohamad Zabawi also revealed that the existing MRDI Super 88 (MS88) hybrid durian will be given a new, more marketable name.

To date, about 13,000 MS88 trees have been planted across the country under Mardi’s supervision.

“Some of these trees are now between two and three years old. Within five to six years, we expect them to be ready for broader commercial rollout,” he added. — Bernama
