THE HAGUE, June 25 — U.S. President Donald Trump claimed today that missile strikes over the weekend caused severe damage to Iranian nuclear sites, although he admitted that the intelligence available was inconclusive.
His remarks came after Reuters and other outlets reported that the U.S. Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) had assessed the strikes only delayed Iran’s nuclear programme by a few months — a sharp contrast to earlier statements from administration officials, who said the programme had been effectively destroyed.
“The intelligence was very inconclusive,” Trump told reporters ahead of a NATO summit in The Hague. “The intelligence says we don’t know. It could’ve been very severe. That’s what the intelligence suggests.”
Later, in the same media session, Trump claimed the strikes had pushed Iran’s nuclear ambitions back “basically decades, because I don’t think they’ll ever do it again.”
Trump was joined by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth, who both expressed skepticism about the DIA’s conclusions.
Rubio also announced that the U.S. would launch an investigation into the leak of the DIA report and suggested the media had mischaracterised its contents. — Reuters
