WASHINGTON, Aug 11 — President Donald Trump on Sunday said homeless people should be moved “far” from Washington, D.C., following days of suggesting he might place the US capital under federal control and falsely claiming crime there is on the rise.

The Republican billionaire announced he will hold a press conference Monday to unveil his plans for Washington, which is governed by its locally elected administration but operates under congressional oversight — an arrangement Trump has long criticized. He has repeatedly threatened to federalize the city and give the White House final authority over its operations.

“I’m going to make our Capital safer and more beautiful than it ever was before,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “The Homeless have to move out, IMMEDIATELY. We will give you places to stay, but FAR from the Capital,” he wrote, adding that criminals would be quickly jailed. “It’s all going to happen very fast.”

Government figures from last year rank Washington 15th among major US cities for homeless population. Thousands sleep on the streets or in shelters each night, though numbers have declined since before the pandemic.

Earlier in the week, Trump also threatened to deploy the National Guard as part of a clampdown on what he inaccurately described as rising crime in the city. Police statistics show violent crime in Washington dropped 26 per cent in the first half of 2025 compared with the same period last year, while Justice Department data indicates 2024 crime rates were the lowest in three decades.

“We are not experiencing a crime spike,” Washington’s Democratic mayor, Muriel Bowser, said on MSNBC Sunday. While she refrained from directly criticizing Trump, she called any comparison to a “war-torn country” hyperbolic and false.

Trump’s remarks come weeks after he ordered California’s military reserve into Los Angeles to quell protests over immigration raids, despite pushback from local leaders and law enforcement. The president has repeatedly floated using the military to exert control over US cities, many of which are Democrat-led and opposed to his nationalist policies. — AFP
