WASHINGTON, Aug 25 — SpaceX has called off a scheduled test flight for its Starship megarocket on Sunday, citing the need for additional time to address issues, marking yet another setback for Elon Musk’s colossal project following a string of explosive failures.
WASHINGTON, Aug 6 — US President Donald Trump signaled on Tuesday that Vice President JD Vance is “most likely” to become the Republican Party’s nominee for president in 2028, as speculation around his potential successor intensifies.
Trump, who had previously declined to endorse a specific heir to his political movement, acknowledged Vance’s growing stature when asked if the vice president would carry the torch for the Make America Great Again (MAGA) agenda.
“Well, I think most likely,” Trump said. “In all fairness, he’s the vice president.”
His comments come amid renewed rumors that Trump may try to defy constitutional term limits by seeking a third term — an idea he has floated before, despite legal restrictions. While merchandise with slogans like “Trump 2028” and “Rewrite the Rules” is still being sold on his official website, Trump told CNBC’s Squawk Box on Tuesday that he would “probably not” run again after a second term.
“I’d like to,” he added. “I have the best poll numbers I’ve ever had.”
Trump went on to praise Vance’s performance, calling him a strong contender should he run in 2028. “It’s too early, obviously, to talk about it, but certainly he’s doing a great job. And he would be probably favored at this point.”
The president also floated the idea of a future political alliance between Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, suggesting they could form a powerful Republican ticket. “I think Marco is also somebody that maybe would get together with JD in some form,” Trump said.
Vance, a former Marine and attorney, has become a central figure in the Trump administration, serving both as a lead domestic policy voice and a key diplomatic representative. He has previously hinted at a 2028 presidential run but has said he would only do so after consulting Trump.
Rubio, once a Florida senator, has seen his own influence rise, becoming the first person since Henry Kissinger to serve simultaneously as national security adviser and secretary of state.
Trump remains a polarizing figure in American politics — the only president in history to be impeached twice, though acquitted by the Senate both times: first in 2019 for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, and again in 2021 for inciting an insurrection. — AFP
