GENEVA, July 15 — The UN human rights office reported today that at least 875 people have been killed over the past six weeks at aid distribution points in Gaza, including those run by the US- and Israeli-supported Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) as well as convoys operated by other humanitarian organisations, including UN agencies.

The majority of the fatalities occurred near GHF sites, while 201 deaths were recorded along routes used by other aid convoys.

GHF relies on private US security and logistics firms to deliver supplies into Gaza, operating outside the UN-led aid distribution system, which Israel claims has been exploited by Hamas to seize humanitarian aid. Hamas has denied these allegations.

GHF, which began distributing food in Gaza in late May after Israel ended an 11-week aid blockade, previously told Reuters there had been no incidents at its sites and accused the UN of spreading misinformation—an accusation the UN denies. GHF has not yet commented on the latest UN figures.

“The data we have comes from our own verified sources, including medical, human rights, and humanitarian organisations,” said Thameen Al-Kheetan, spokesperson for the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, during a briefing in Geneva.

The UN has criticized the GHF’s distribution approach, calling it “inherently unsafe” and contrary to humanitarian neutrality principles.

On Friday, GHF stated it had delivered over 70 million meals to Palestinians in Gaza within five weeks, and claimed that other aid groups had seen “nearly all of their aid looted” by Hamas or criminal gangs.

The Israeli military, in a statement to Reuters, said it is reviewing recent mass casualty events and has taken steps to reduce clashes between civilians and Israeli forces, including putting up fencing, signage, and opening new access routes.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has previously reported instances of violent looting of aid shipments, while the UN World Food Programme noted last week that many aid trucks entering Gaza have been intercepted by desperate civilians. — Reuters
