JOHOR BAHRU, July 21 — Thousands of Malaysian commuters heading to Singapore were left stranded this morning after around 100 cross-border shuttle bus drivers went on strike at 5am.

According to Berita Harian, many Malaysians and other travelers found themselves stuck at major bus stops and the Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI) due to the disruption.

With limited alternatives, some workers were seen walking across the Johor Causeway to reach Singapore.

One bus driver, who identified himself only as Atoi, told Berita Harian that the strike was triggered by dissatisfaction over wage reductions. He claimed drivers’ salaries had been slashed by nearly a third — from RM2,800–RM2,900 previously, to below RM2,000 now.

In addition to the pay cut, drivers were also required to increase their daily trips from four to five.

Johor’s Public Works, Transportation, Infrastructure, and Communication Committee Chairman, Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh, is currently in discussions with the bus company and the striking drivers in an effort to resolve the issue.
