WASHINGTON, June 12 — The White House stated on Tuesday that President Donald Trump will not tolerate “mob rule,” as demonstrations against his immigration policies continue to spread across the U.S., despite a military-backed crackdown in Los Angeles.
BUENOS AIRES, June 5 — Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni said on Wednesday that a decision had not yet been made on whether captain Lionel Messi would start in their upcoming World Cup qualifier against Chile, as the team continues to assess the 37-year-old’s fitness.
Although Argentina have already secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup and currently top the South American standings, they face last-placed Chile on Thursday with several regular players missing — and Messi’s participation still uncertain.
“We’ve been in contact with Messi recently, but we haven’t decided if he’ll start,” Scaloni told reporters. “It would be good to see how he’s feeling physically. For now, he’s available, and we’ll decide later.”
With several players ruled out due to injury or suspension, Scaloni sees this match as an opportunity to test emerging talent in preparation for defending their World Cup title next year in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
“We’re missing a lot of players, so if the new call-ups are fit, they’ll get their chance,” he said. “The starting eleven isn’t confirmed yet, but we want to give minutes to those who haven’t played much but are ready for the challenge.”
Scaloni emphasized that while results still matter, the focus in this match is on development and team cohesion.
“Every match is valuable. It’s a good chance to evaluate new players, and even though the result matters, it’s not everything,” he said. “Matches like these help players integrate and grow with the team.
Despite the experimental lineup, Scaloni said Argentina's commitment to playing at a high level remains unchanged.
“We always want to compete. These matches are not inconvenient for us — quite the opposite. It’s a great opportunity, even with its difficulties, and we’re in a strong position to approach it with confidence.”
Scaloni also commented on Carlo Ancelotti’s appointment as Brazil’s new head coach, praising the Italian’s influence.
“It’s a great move. He’s one of the best coaches of our time and will further elevate Brazil,” said Scaloni. “I admire his approach and personality. He adds value to the game, and I wish him the very best.” — Reuters
