PARIS, June 7 — US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth warned yesterday that Europe was facing what he described as an “invasion” of dangerous ideologies arriving by sea, drawing a link between immigration and the legacy of the D-Day landings during remarks in Normandy.
KUANTAN, May 12 — A 76-year-old woman was cheated out of RM327,600 after falling victim to a phone scam syndicate impersonating police officers.
Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the victim received a call from an individual claiming to be a police officer from Sarawak, who alleged that her identity card number was linked to fraudulent activity and that her bank accounts were under investigation.
The suspect reportedly instructed the woman not to inform anyone, including family members, and told her to transfer money as part of an “investigation” to prove her innocence, assuring her that the funds would be returned once the case was resolved.
Yahaya said the victim proceeded to make 42 transactions amounting to RM327,600 into seven different bank accounts between May 28, 2025, and March 25 this year, using her savings and loans obtained from moneylending companies.
She was also allegedly persuaded to use two land titles as collateral to secure the loans.
The scam only came to light when her child requested the land documents to process inheritance matters following the death of her husband, as the property was still registered under his name.
Yahaya reminded the public to be cautious of calls from individuals claiming to be enforcement officers or government agencies and to avoid transferring money to unknown accounts. — Bernama
