KATHMANDU, May 11 — A Turkish Airlines Airbus A330 was evacuated after a tyre fire broke out following its landing in Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, forcing the airport to temporarily close for about an hour.

All 277 passengers and 11 crew members on board the flight from Istanbul were safely evacuated using emergency exits, with no injuries reported, said Gyanendra Bhul, spokesperson for the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal.

He said the fire originated in the aircraft’s right rear tyre. The blaze was later extinguished, and the plane was towed to the taxiway before being grounded.

The airline confirmed that smoke was detected in the landing gear while taxiing, prompting immediate technical inspections. Senior vice president of communications Yahya Ustun said initial findings point to a hydraulic pipe malfunction as the likely cause.

An additional flight has been arranged to transport the affected passengers, he added. — Reuters
