SIBU, Oct 9 — Police are investigating an attempted theft of an underground electricity cable along Jalan Pedanum in Pakan yesterday.

Julau district police chief DSP Alif Haiqal Ramesh Abdullah said the vandalism was discovered around 9am by a Sarawak Energy Berhad engineer during a routine inspection.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the 240mm x 3C aluminium underground cable had been cut with a sharp tool or grinder. However, the suspect fled before retrieving it, as the upper section of the cable remained attached to the pole,” he said in a statement today.

He added that the incident occurred about 15km from the Pakan Police Station in a remote area with no street lighting or CCTV coverage. The nearest longhouse is approximately 3km away, surrounded by oil palm plantations.

The damage, estimated at RM4,000, is the first case of its kind reported in the area.

“The cable is not yet operational as the installation project is still in progress, but it is covered by insurance,” he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 431A of the Penal Code for mischief involving public utilities.
