BANGKOK, April 24 — Thailand’s Supreme Court on Friday agreed to hear a petition accusing 44 current and former opposition lawmakers of ethics violations over their 2021 move to amend a law protecting the monarchy from criticism, according to Thai media reports.
PUTRAJAYA, April 24 — The Court of Appeal today dismissed Kepala Batas MP Dr Siti Mastura’s appeal against a High Court ruling ordering her to pay RM825,000 in damages and costs for defaming three DAP leaders by linking them to former Communist Party of Malaya leader Chin Peng.
A three-judge panel led by Datuk Ahmad Kamal Md Shahid, together with Datin Paduka Evrol Mariette Peters and Datuk Seri Latifah Mohd Tahar, unanimously rejected the appeal, ruling it was without merit.
Delivering the decision, Justice Ahmad Kamal said the court upheld the High Court’s judgment dated Dec 4, 2024, including the award of global damages and costs amounting to RM825,000.
The appellate court also found no basis to disturb the High Court’s findings.
However, it was noted that on Jan 23, 2025, Siti Mastura had already settled RM830,034.75, which covered damages, legal costs and interest payable to DAP veteran Tan Sri Lim Kit Siang, DAP adviser Lim Guan Eng and Seputeh MP Teresa Kok Suh Sim.
Justice Ahmad Kamal, who delivered the decision via Zoom, also said the court dismissed the cross-appeal filed by the DAP leaders. — Bernama
