PARIS, March 9 — The PARIS, March 9 — AFC Ajax have appointed Óscar García as their new head coach, while Fred Grim returns to his previous position within the club’s academy.

Grim had been promoted to the first team in November following the dismissal of John Heitinga after only six months in charge.

Ajax technical director Jordi Cruyff said the decision came after discussions with Grim about what would be best for the club.

García, who had been coaching Ajax’s youth side, will lead the team for the remainder of the season. The Spanish coach previously managed Brighton & Hove Albion and won league titles with Maccabi Tel Aviv F.C. and RB Salzburg.

The 36-time Dutch champions have struggled in recent years, last winning the Eredivisie title in 2022. They are currently fifth in the standings, five points behind second-placed Feyenoord, which occupies the final direct qualification spot for the UEFA Champions League league phase.

Ajax are also recovering from a dramatic collapse at the end of last season when they squandered a nine-point lead with five matches remaining, eventually losing the title to PSV Eindhoven after two defeats and two draws. — AFP
