KUALA LUMPUR, June 3 — Umno supreme council member Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan reportedly said that while Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim holds the authority to decide on Cabinet appointments, it is not inappropriate for political parties to offer input.

According to the New Straits Times, Ahmad Maslan noted that this includes Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s suggestion that a ministerial position be given to Umno if Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz joins PKR.

“The final decision lies with the Prime Minister, as Cabinet matters fall under his discretion and political authority,” he said.

Ahmad Maslan, who also serves as deputy works minister, was responding to Anwar’s recent comment that there was no urgent need for a Cabinet reshuffle, as the government continues to function effectively despite the resignation of two ministers.

Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad stepped down from their posts on May 28 after losing in the PKR party elections.

Two days later, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul announced his resignation from Umno and his intention to apply for PKR membership.

Last Friday, Ahmad Zahid stated that the post of economy minister should be filled promptly, especially with the 13th Malaysia Plan scheduled to be tabled in July.
