MANCHESTER, April 28 — Manchester United moved closer to securing Champions League qualification with a 2-1 victory over Brentford on Monday, but interim manager Michael Carrick said the team must continue pushing to finish as high as possible in the Premier League.
TEHRAN, April 28 — Iran on Tuesday said the United States is no longer in a position to dictate terms to other nations, as Washington reviews a new Iranian proposal concerning the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran has effectively restricted access to the strategic waterway since the early stages of its conflict with the United States and Israel, disrupting global energy supplies and placing the strait at the centre of ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the war.
Defence ministry spokesman Reza Talaei-Nik, speaking on state television, said: “The United States is no longer in a position to dictate its policy to independent nations,” adding that Washington would eventually have to “abandon its illegal and irrational demands.”
Although a ceasefire has halted hostilities between Iran, the US and Israel, negotiations aimed at a lasting resolution have yet to produce results.
A proposal currently under consideration in Washington is said to involve reopening the Strait of Hormuz — a key route for global oil and gas shipments — as part of broader peace talks.
Talaei-Nik also said Iran is prepared to “share its defensive military capabilities with independent countries,” particularly members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, ahead of an upcoming SCO defence ministers’ meeting.— AFP
