WASHINGTON, June 12 — The White House stated on Tuesday that President Donald Trump will not tolerate “mob rule,” as demonstrations against his immigration policies continue to spread across the U.S., despite a military-backed crackdown in Los Angeles.
BOURNEMOUTH, April 28 — Ruben Amorim told Manchester United fans that “everything can change” in the Premier League after bitter rivals Liverpool matched his struggling club’s record of 20 English titles.
Amorim’s team sits in 14th place following a narrow escape with a 1-1 draw at 10-man Bournemouth yesterday, thanks to a stoppage-time equalizer from Rasmus Hojlund.
United seemed headed for a 16th defeat in their worst-ever Premier League season when Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo scored in the 23rd minute. However, a controversial red card for Bournemouth's Evanilson in the 70th minute, following a challenge on United’s Noussair Mazraoui, shifted the momentum, leading to Hojlund's late equalizer.
United supporters at the Vitality Stadium responded defiantly by singing about their 20 titles after Liverpool’s triumph, which was secured later in the day with a 5-1 victory over Tottenham at Anfield.
Amorim echoed the sentiment of United’s fans, stressing that his team would eventually add to their title count during his tenure.
“The first thing is to focus on ourselves, not on other teams,” he said.
“Next, we need to be honest. United and Liverpool are at different levels right now, but everything can change. I remember when I first started watching the Premier League, it was the opposite, so everything can change.”
Currently 43 points behind Liverpool, United is fighting to avoid their lowest finish since their relegation in 1973-74 while also striving to reach the Europa League final. They travel to Athletic Bilbao for the first leg of the semi-final on Thursday, and Amorim will focus on that for now, admitting that catching Liverpool next season will be impossible.
“We need to focus on step by step, not think too far ahead,” he said. “Our ultimate goal is to win the Premier League. I’m not crazy; I know that won’t happen next year. We need to improve, but we know how important it is for the fans, and we must be honest with them and work hard every day.”
Bournemouth looked set to complete a first-ever league double over United after Semenyo capitalized on a disastrous United free-kick to score. However, with time running out, Luke Shaw’s low cross was turned towards goal by Manuel Ugarte, and Hojlund instinctively diverted the ball beyond Kepa Arrizabalaga.
“The start of the game was tough for us—high pressure from the opponent, we lost possession in our build-up, and their goal came from that,” Amorim said. “If you look at our games, it's often our fault in how we concede goals, and it makes everything harder. We managed to score, but I feel we lost two points today.” — AFP
