KUALA LUMPUR, April 14 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has paid heartfelt tribute to Malaysia’s fifth prime minister, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, following news of his passing.

Fondly known as Pak Lah, Anwar described him as a man of deep integrity and kindness, saying he mourns not only the loss of a national leader but also a close friend and former political rival.

“Pak Lah was more than just a leader — he was a statesman with a compassionate soul who introduced a new tone to Malaysian politics,” Anwar said in a statement.

Reflecting on his final visit to the ailing former leader, Anwar recalled the peace and warmth Abdullah exuded even in frailty. “His eyes still carried the calm and love that defined his leadership,” he said.

Anwar praised Abdullah’s legacy of reform, highlighting his efforts in strengthening institutions, promoting judicial independence, and fostering transparency in governance.

“He introduced Islam Hadhari as a balanced approach that connected progress with values, ensuring development was people-centered,” Anwar noted.

He also acknowledged Abdullah’s contributions to rural empowerment under the Ninth Malaysia Plan and his role in broadening public discourse through increased media openness.

“Above all, Pak Lah taught us the value of compassion in leadership,” Anwar added, recalling Abdullah’s empathy during his own difficult times. “He never responded with bitterness, even when it would have been easy.”

Anwar extended his condolences to Tun Jeanne Abdullah, Abdullah’s son-in-law Khairy Jamaluddin, and the family, stating that the entire nation grieves the loss of a true statesman.

“Rest well, Pak Lah. Malaysia will forever be grateful for your service and wisdom,” he said, praying for Allah’s mercy and forgiveness upon him.

Tun Abdullah passed away at the age of 85.
